These sections of EnglishIntroduction to Professional Writing are designed for English majors and other students preparing for careers in writing and editing, this course introduces key concepts and practices of professional and technical writing.


Students will learn project development and management, introduction to professional writing, field research, document design and visual rhetoric, use of style guides, professional editing, and usability testing. This course will culminate in a writer's portfolio, which will include individual and team-based media projects, such as documentation, pamphlets, press kits, web sites, and reports.

For your major assignments, you will produce a Professional Document Analysisa Corporate Style Guideand a Technical Report. The Technical Report will be Presented to the class.


Introduction to professional writing of these assignments is further detailed separately. Collaborative work is a major element of our course. You and your team members are responsible for updating one another and me about assignment progress. In addition, you are responsible for negotiating together all aspects of your work including planning, drafting, revising, file managing, and scheduling of tasks.


You will be asked to evaluate your own and your peers' participation in collaborative projects, and thus, you should maintain detailed notes and records about your work. All assignments that are turned in should be typed and formatted appropriately for the type of document you are writing.


All assignments will be submitted electronically to the Desire2Learn conference for your specific class. When turning in assignments electronically, it is your responsibility to ensure that I have received the document, and I am able to access its contents.


If I am unable to access your assignment electronically or if there is a problem with the file, I will notify you and you will then need to correct the problem and resubmit the assignment. Late assignments are, well, late.


You may not make up Quizzes. You may not make up a scheduled Presentation including Discussion Leader if you miss it, unless you have spoken with me beforehand.


Speaking with me means that you have explicated a problem, proposed a solution, and I have responded to you. Speaking with me doesn't not include an email sent to me five minutes before class. I will accept major assignments when they are late since you must complete all major assignments in order to pass the class. I will not grant extensions easily, but if you absolutely cannot meet the deadline because of something unavoidable, contact me as soon as possible so we can discuss the situation.


Computer problems are not an acceptable excuse for a late assignment. With the variety of resources on campus, you should have ample opportunity to complete your assignments on time. Backup your work more than once. Basically, I ask that you come to class, introduction to professional writing, do the readings, participate in the discussions, invest yourself in the activities, work well with your group, and have a generally pleasant time in the course.


Nonetheless, in as much as we are in an institution of higher learning, and I am held responsible for asking you to adhere to some more specific guidelines.
